- NERC specific

General Guidance:

All schemes which include the Research Council Facilities section require the applicant to either tick the box to confirm that facilities are not relevant to the proposal or else complete the section. Each relevant facility should be selected from the drop down list and costs/units (mandatory for EPSRC schemes) and proposed usage (mandatory for BBSRC, NERC and STFC schemes) as appropriate. For the STFC large-scale facilities i.e CLF, Diamond, ESRF, ILL and ISIS, which are free at the point of access, enter “0” for cost, units and proposed usage. For all other RC facilities, if requesting ‘grant access running costs’, please make sure that these funds are added to the ‘Other Directly Incurred’ section within the Je-S proforma.

There is an “other” option available for all but NERC and this should be used where a relevant facility does not currently exist in the drop down list. Where “other” is selected as an option it is then mandatory for the full name of the facility to be provided in the proposed usage field.

Some facilities require a mandatory attachment type of “Technical Assessment” to be uploaded when selected from the list as follows:

BBSRC:

ARCHER2

Earlham Institute

National Wind Tunnel Facility

Research Complex at Harwell (RCAH)

EPSRC:

HarwellXPS

National Wind Tunnel Facility

The UK 850MHz Solid State NMR Facility

UK National Ion Beam Centre

MRC:

Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM)

Field Spectroscopy Facility (FSF)

Geophysical Equipment Facility (GEF) - Edinburgh

Geophysical Equipment Facility (GEF) - Leicester

Geophysical Equipment Facility (GEF) - (Ocean Bottom Instruments) Durham/Soton

Ion Microprobe Facility (IMF)

National Environmental Isotope Facility (NEIF)

NERC Environmental Omics Facility (NEOF)

Before submitting your proposal, please check with the facility/service provider that the resource is available and to ascertain the costs of the service.

- THE FOLLOWING IS COUNCIL SPECIFIC GUIDANCE -

NERC - Specific Requirements:

For some facilities, ship-time/marine equipment (SME), Antarctic Logistics Support, and High Performance Computing (only when use of ARCHER2 exceeds 500 kCU in any one year, for the whole project), the grant application form must have an additional application form attached. Please see the NERC Handbook for details and points of contact.  The sea-time SME form should not be submitted through Je-S, this should be done by creating a Cruise Profile through the Marine Facilities Planning webpage http://mfpapps.noc.ac.uk/mfp/mfp.php. The SME number should then be entered on the grant application within the 'Proposed Usage' field.

For all other NERC facilities, choose the facility you wish to use from the drop down list and complete the units and costs fields. The facility costs should also be entered within the ‘Other Directly Incurred Costs' section. For joint grants, choose the facility on the Proforma of the RO who will be using the facility only. Contact with the facility should be made prior to submission to ensure that the work can be done, both from a scientific aspect and to confirm that the facility has the capacity to fulfil your request during the required time period. The facility staff will be able to provide details of the costs and where applicable this confirmation should be added as the attachment type ‘Technical Assessment’. For joint grants, only the components using the facility should list the facility and costs on their individual proforma. Costs are not required for HPC.

If you wish to have HPC/supercomputing time (ARCHER2/MONSooN2) and you have ticked ‘facilities are not relevant to this application’ your access to these facilities cannot be guaranteed.
